尾張藩が水政策で江戸初期に築造。水神様の「八大龍王」が棲むという立石池のこと。
長久手で水辺空間の散策に良い大池といえば、杁ヶ池公園とジブリの大倉庫の南側の「こいの池」、そしてこの立石池だろう。立石池のルーツは、徳川幕府の四代将軍家綱の時代にまで遡るようです。
長久手の地は、徳川家から徳川家康公が合戦で秀吉に勝利した誉高い地として尾張徳川藩の「蔵入地」（大名や藩の直轄地）が多く、この立石池もまた尾張藩の水政策の一つとして、田圃の日照り対策用として当時の最先端土木技術を駆使して数年をかけ築造した貯水池でした。
そしていつからか水神様の「八大龍王」が棲む池として信仰されるようになっていきました。
立石池の南側から小高い堤の上へ。
この立石池の歴史は古い。築造されたのはなんと尾張名古屋藩二代藩主・徳川光友の時代（1660年代）。現在、愛知医科大がある場所にあった少し上流の権八上池から流れる雁又川に、築堤し貯水・排水など当時の優れた土木技術を駆使し、当時の先端の貯水池をつくったのがはじまりです。旱魃対策として長久手には大小の数多い貯水池がありますが、長久手の古い貯水池としては、杁ヶ池と共に最も知られた大池となっています。
立石池の辺りに立つ「八大龍王」の石碑。大正2年の長い旱魃の際に、伊勢・多度神社から黒幣様を迎え、長久手村民は各々の氏神神社に雨乞いの祈願をしたと言います。そして岩作・豊龍院、大草の三光院、長湫の豊善院と、真言宗の三人の僧正が立石池の南堤で、池中に棲むという雨を司どる龍神の「八大龍王」に17日間連続で祈願。数日後に大雨となり、村民一同が感謝し建立したものと伝えられています。石碑は、1990年に修復再建されたもの。
2022年、長久手の秋の空に突如現れた赤い雲をまとった龍の赤子。左右に長く強く黄金色に輝いている。写真の左端から３cm程のところが小龍の頭部と手足とみられる。
歌碑は、建立した岩作の中根の加藤守松・すずえ夫妻によって建立された。加藤氏の祖父で文人だった加藤善龍氏が詠んだ岩作八景（天保年代 1830~1844）の一つ。
池の北側に建つのは愛知医科大学。愛知県下で唯一ドクターヘリを持つ。医科大学の敷地は、江戸時代初期にもともと池が在った。その池から流れ出る小川を堰き止め築堤し貯水したのが立石池の始まりとなった。現在も調整池として現役の池です。
平成19年に水辺空間を活かした散策路が池の周囲に設けられた。
