駒村和廣さんが市民に無償で提供している竹の杖のこと【長久手タイムズ】
長久手市内の南小校区共生ステーションを始め幾つかの共生ステーションや何ヶ所かの高齢者施設には、なんとも味のある素敵な竹の杖が無償で提供されていることがあります。
聞けば２年前から竹の杖が無償で提供されるようになったとのこと。提供者は杁ヶ池公園のマスターでもある駒村和廣さんとのことで二度びっくり。
駒村さんは昨年１年間に100本の杖を無償で提供され、噂が広まり今年もまたかなりの数の杖を各所に提供されてられるとのこと。ご自身も83歳であっても、体が動くうちは皆さんに喜ばれることにはできる限り応えたくなる性分とのこと。今回、駒村さんの工房である「むさし工房」にお話を伺いにお邪魔致しました。
竹は長久手市内からすぐ近くに竹林を持つ地主さんから提供されています。もっとも竹を取りに行くのは駒村さんご自身です。竹は写真のように根っこをつけた状態で掘り出します。地面を20cm以上掘らなくてはならず、１本の竹を掘り出すのに15分程はかかるとのこと。
傾斜のある場所では、20分くらいかかるとのことではなっから容易い作業ではないことが想像できます。
竹は一本一本、異なっています。節の付き方、太さ、曲がり方と人と一緒で同じ形のものはこの世に一本しかありません。
これは真竹の変種の「布袋竹」と言われる竹です。真竹は真っ直ぐに天に向かって伸びる特徴から和風庭園や神社で見られたり、竹細工に用いられます。
「布袋竹」は、クセがあり曲がったり節間が膨らんだり一本一本に趣きがあります。手にしっくりくるような持ち味は「布袋竹」ならではです。

竹は、竹のなかでも耐用があり丈夫な「布袋竹（ホテイチク）」を選んでられます。「布袋竹」は真竹の変種。なぜ「布袋」と名付けられたかというと、節と節の間が七福神の布袋様のお腹のようにぷっくりしているからで、折れにくく縁起もいいとされてます。そのためお遍路さんの杖に使用されているとのこと。長久手前市長の吉田一平さんも四国お遍路を巡られた時に、駒村さんが作られた竹杖を用いられました。聞くところによると、あの水戸黄門様のあの杖も「布袋竹」だったと言います。
バーナーで竹を炙って油を抜きしていきます。すると緑色から変色し茶褐色になり硬度が一気に増します。同時に竹の中から溢れ出た天然の油分が艶を出し独特な風合いが出てくるとのこと。
その後、乾燥させると徐々に水分が抜け出て、杖はどんどん硬く、逆に軽くなっていきます。透明なニスで塗装するとさらに割れにくくなるとのことです。
万力と鉄の筒で竹のしなりやを調整したり柄の形や角度を調整します。
駒村さんは愛・地球博の会場で花をアレンジしてプランターに花を植え、来場者を花でおもてなしをする180人程のメンバーの一人として活動されています。その時の万博会場を油絵で描かれたものとのこと。
駒村さんのご自宅の屋上には、杁ヶ池公園に移植した絶滅危惧種の「豆梨」の長久手保存会育苗所がある。竹への関心や取り組みはこうした植物への並々ならぬ想いとつながっている。
苗から育ってきた豆梨の木。陽当たりと湿度を調整しながら絶えず植物への目配せは怠りない。
