800台のミニチュアカーのタイムライン【トヨタ博物館（４）】
トヨタ博物館を訪れた際には、正面の「クルマ館」だけでなく、空中通路で繋がっている「文化館」にぜひ足を伸ばしましょう。
「文化館」２階にはイベントスペースのほか、クルマ文化資料室があります。
「文化館」２階の入り口には、カラフルなLEGO レゴブロックでつくられたトヨタ博物館が迎えてくれます。
館内のクルマも人物もレゴで作られ、周囲にはレゴでつくられたリニモのレールや駅がつくられ、とくに子供たちには人気のスポットです。
この空中通路の向こう側にクルマ文化資料室があります。クルマ関係の各種出版物やカタログ、自動車ポスター、カーバッジ、カーマスコット、自動車切手、自動車玩具・ゲーム、ライセンスプレート、文学・マンガ・映画・音楽の９つのゾーンで構成され、4,000点にものぼる貴重な資料が見やすく間近に展示されています。
いかにクルマが様々な文化領域とかかわってきたかが見て取れ多くの気づきや発見がもたらされます。これだけのものを一堂に見れる場所は他にはないでしょう。
「クルマ館」から「文化館」へと向かう空中通路。いざ「文化館」へ！
一歩足を踏み入れると驚きの光景が広がっています。横長のガラスショーケースが幾つも一直線に置かれ、18世紀中頃からの自動車の黎明期から今日までの自動車の歴史がタイムラインのストリームとなっての展示は他ではみることができないでしょう。ミニチュアカー（1/43模型）800余台から成る壮大な展示は、まさに一つの自動車文化を体現しています。右端に少し空間があるのは、そのラインが日本のクルマの生産の歴史で、日本にクルマが未だ存在していないことを空白で表しています。中央のタイムラインが米国、一番左側が英国、ドイツ、フランス、イタリア、スウェーデンなどヨーロッパ車のタイムラインとなっています。
クルマの製造のタイムラインの最初は、1769年のフランスの「キュニョーの砲車（Cugnot’s Steam Carriage）から始まっています。これが世界初の自動車として認定され、また1769年が自動車誕生の年とされています。
「キュニョーの砲車」は、フランス陸軍の砲兵部隊のためにルイ15世の陸軍大臣が製作させた三輪蒸気自動車です。馬の代わりに蒸気機関で大砲の牽引に使えるか検討するための試作車でした。
明治時代の初期、日本がまだ人力車だった頃、欧米各国では馬車から四輪の蒸気自動車が走っていました。
人力車以外なにも無かったタイムラインに1898年（明治31年）「日本に自動車初渡来」が登場。フランス人技師ジャン・マリー・テブネが持ち込んだガソリン自動車「パナール・エ・ルヴァッソール（Panhard et Levassor）」でした。じつは長い間、日本への最初の自動車渡来は、戦前は1900年の「皇太子献納車説」、戦後も1900年の「ロコモビル説」が長く続き（自動車工業会の支持）、その後幾つかの異説が出されたものの裏付け資料がない状態でした。
1898年説が決定的になったのは、トヨタ博物館の学芸員・鈴木忠道氏がフランスの自動車博物館などと共に調査し決定的な裏付け資料の判明でした。フランスの自動車雑誌『LA FRANCE AUTOMOBILE』（1898年4月16日号）の記事に加え、パナール・エ・ルヴァッソール社の生産記録と納車記録が確認されました。
上の画像は、「となりのトトロ」の時代背景になっている1950年代半ばに日本と欧米で走っていた代表的なクルマです。一番手前が日本のクルマ、次いでアメリカ車、ヨーロッパ各国のクルマが続きます。日本の黒いクルマは1955年に製造されたトヨペット・クラウン・デラックスと1956年製造のトヨペット・クラウン。一番右端のオート三輪車は1957年製造のダイハツ・ミゼットです。
トヨタ博物館の平田雅己さんのお話では、「文化館」が構想される以前に、かなりの数のミニチュアカーやその他のクルマに関する文化資料がすでに集められていて保存されていたとのことです。クルマ文化資料室の構想が具体化され、晴れて多くの方の目に触れるようになった訳です。こうした精緻なコレクションは日本人ならではかも知れません。
こちらは「クルマ館」から「文化館」に向かう入り口に展示されたミニチュアカーのコーナー。
懐かしき「マッハ GoGoGo」「サンダーバード」「007」「バットマン」「ウルトラマン」など主人公たちと彼らが使用する車のミニチュアが一緒に展示されています。自動車は主人公のキャラクターをシンボリックに表現する存在でもありました。
最後の画像は、「文化館」２階の自動車文化資料室の展示の一部。往年のプラモデルのコーナーから。これら以外にもノスタルジーと魅力に満ちたクルマの歴史的文化資料を見ることができます。
